Early Ohio Militia Document Related to Election and Resignation of Captain Addison Hunt of Geauga County, Signed by General James H. Paine

This 1841 document states that Addison Hunt of Geauga County, Ohio, “took an oath to support the Constitution…and the State of Ohio…to perform the duties of Capt of the 2nd Rifles Comp. in the 3 Regt, 1st Brig, and 21st Div of Ohio Militia according to law and the best of his abilities.” It is dated May 14, 1841, and is signed by “Harry Isham, Lieut. Col. of 2d Reg.”
Underneath this appears a second statement, which reads, “Captain Hunt has resigned and it is accepted & he is honorably discharged. It is signed by a Brigadier General J. H. Pain or Paine, commanding the 1st Brigade, 21st Division, Ohio Militia.
On the other side of the sheet is a short letter written in blue ink. Written to Addison Hunt, the letter states that since Hunt had “been duly elected Captain of the 2nd Company of Rifflery in the 3d Reg, 1st Brig, 21st Division, Ohio Militia at an election holden on the 14th of May in AD 1841 you are therefore hereby authorized and required forthwith to enter on the duties of your said office.” It is dated from Painesville and signed for Brigadier General James H. Pain by Colonel Harlow Port of “said Regt.”
The document is in very good condition with light foxing and toning. Creased at original folds. Measures about 7 1/2” x 5 3/4”.
