This is a nice 1/8 plate tintype of a young Yankee private. He stands at attention, uniformed in his four-button sack coat and dark blue trousers. He wears a cartridge box sling, cap pouch, sash, and a Pennsylvania state belt plate (upside down). The badge on his kepi has “WG” surrounded by a wreath, the badge of the Washington Grays, a militia organization out of Philadelphia. The Grays formed two companies of the 17th Pennsylvania and also organized companies to defend the state from Lee’s invasions in 1862 and 1863.

A small U.S. parade flag is playfully sticking out of the front of the man’s kepi. He is armed with a Model 1842 Springfield musket with fixed bayonet. Behind the man, the photographer’s neck brace is visible in front of the painted backdrop. Comes in a full leather case with repaired hinge.
