Post–Civil War Surgeon's Amputation Kit - A. L. Hernstein, New York

$0.00

Item No. 2343953

This piece of grisly medical history is a fine boxed set of surgeon's instruments for use in the amputation of limbs. The label inside the case indicates the kit was produced by surgical-tool maker Albert L. Hernstein of New York. The 52 Maiden Lane address on the label was used by Hernstein in the early 1870s. The kit contains sixteen pieces including a bone saw, forceps, several smaller knives and saws, two pair of tweezers (one of which has bone tips), a tourniquet, a set of heavy chains and hooks, and several large needles and silk thread for sewing wounds closed. A small key is also included, which fits the key hole but did not engage the lock when turned. The entire kit is contained in a fine wooden case. Very good condition overall, with expected wear to instruments as well as the beige velvet lining of the case. The exterior of the case has a few minor blemishes as well.
