This Confederate requisition form is dated May 1864 and states across the top, “Requisition for Stores for Gen H Morgans Cavl Comd.” Morgan, whose controversial 1862 cavalry raid into Indiana and Ohio ended with his capture, imprisonment, and subsequent escape, was at the time of this document’s creation commanding a smaller group of raiders that pestered Federal supply and communication lines in Kentucky. In the month following the writing of this form, Morgan and his command would embark upon their final raid into Kentucky, culminating in the Second Battle of Cynthiana.

The form, written out and signed by Morgan’s commissary officer Captain James A. Wilson (formerly of the 8th Kentucky Cavalry) requested 19,600 rations of bacon, corn meal, rice, vinegar, candles, soap, and salt for the command’s 2,800 men.

The document measures about 10 1/2” x 7 1/4” and is in excellent condition. The paper is of the typical thin, grainy Confederate paper and the ink has bled through to the other side, though it has not burned through in any place. Creased where originally folded.
