CDV of Lovell General Hospital - Army Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island
Item No. 9896883
A very rare CDV view of Lovell General Hospital, a U.S. Army hospital near Newport, Rhode Island. In service from July 1862 to August 1865, thousands of sick and wounded men were treated at Lovell, including many men convicted by court martial and confederate prisoners of war. In this CDV by Newport photographer Joshua A. Williams, one of the hospital’s buildings is featured. It’s purpose is unclear, but a group of five NCOs had gathered outside and stood from their chairs to pose for the camera. Before the tree in the foreground are a young boy and girl. A black dog is seen asleep on the bottom step underneath the window at center. The carte is in excellent condition as shown. It measures about 4” x 2 1/2”. Williams’s backmark is on the reverse.
