Item No. 7915153

A very rare CDV view of Lovell General Hospital, a U.S. Army hospital near Newport, Rhode Island, in Portsmouth Grove. In service from July 1862 to August 1865, thousands of sick and wounded men were treated at Lovell, including many men convicted by court martial and confederate prisoners of war. In this CDV by Newport photographer Joshua A. Williams, two soldiers stand in the center foreground. One holds the handles of a wheel barrow while the other kneels with a dog in his lap. In the background to the right, another soldier waits outside the door to the post office. Other signs identify buildings as the commissary office and the Kinsley’s Express office. The carte is in excellent condition as shown. It measures about 4” x 2 1/2”. Williams’s backmark is on the reverse.
