Item No. 3166776
An excellent March 1865 autograph letter signed by Union General Winfield Scott Hancock while at Winchester, Virginia. Hancock was then in command of the Middle Military Division and the 19th Corps. The letter was written to Colonel William W. H. Davis. It reads, in part, “I am much obliged to you for your attention and for your assistance in filling up my corps. I do not know that you can assist me in any other manner than by occasionally notice the success of the organization.” Hancock was possibly referring to his own 19th Corps, but more likely he was referring to the First Veteran Corps, an organization he recruited through the winter but that never achieved its desired strength. The letter was written on one side of a 5” x 8” stationery sheet. It is in excellent condition with two creases at the original mail folds. Slight remnants of previous album mounting on the reverse. The letter was written and signed in ink in Hancock’s distinctive style.
