Rare 1865 Autograph Letter Signed by Major General Benjamin Grierson
Rare 1865 Autograph Letter Signed by Major General Benjamin Grierson
Item No. 6026447
A rare ALS by Union General Benjamin Grierson dated March 5, 1865, from New Orleans, where he was in command of the cavalry in the Department of the Gulf. Written to Colonel William W. H. Davis, original colonel of the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteers, the letter states that Grierson is “agreeable to your request & subscribe myself.” This letter came out of a collection of letters received by Davis. Several concerned a monument for the 104th Pennsylvania, and as Grierson was a Pennsylvania native, perhaps Grierson was “subscribing” to the effort to build the monument. Grierson is best known for for the raid that bears his name. Grierson’s Raid was an 1863 expedition through Confederate-held territory that severed enemy communication lines between Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Confederate commanders in the Eastern Theater. The letter was written on a single side of a stationery sheet measuring 5” x 8”. It is in excellent condition as shown with creases the original mailing folds. Slight remnants on the reverse from a previous album placement. The letter reads:
