Dated May 30, 1860, this check is signed by William E. "Grumble" Jones, who months later would raise a company of the 1st Virginia Cavalry, fight under JEB Stuart at First Manassas, and later would become a general in the Confederate Army. He was killed at the Battle of Piedmont in June 1864. The check measures about 7” x 3” and is drawn on the Farmers’ & Mechanics’ Bank of Philadelphia.
