This small book is is a guide for officers to train infantry in the “school of the battalion.” It is the second volume of Hardee’s Tactics, published in 1861 by J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia. 232 pages, cloth-bound, with a number of fold-out diagrams. Good, tight binding. Measures about 3 1/2” x 5 1/4”. On the inside-front cover it is inscribed in pencil, “Col. Frizell Presented to Capt. C. R. Maus, Co. I, 94th Regt. O.V.I.” Colonel Joseph W. Frizell commanded the 94th and was a brevet brigadier by the war’s end. Captain Charles R. Maus had served with the 94th since it was formed in the summer of 1862 and resigned in January 1865.
