This small book is is a guide for officers to train infantry in the “school of the soldier.” It is the first volume of Hardee’s Tactics, published in 1861 by J. O. Griffith & Co., Nashville, Tennessee. 250 pages, cloth-bound. Good, tight binding. On the inside-front cover it is inscribed in pencil with the name James Sebring of the 94th Ohio Volunteers, of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 14th Corps. The inside-back cover, then, is inscribed to Captain Charles R. Maus, also of the 94th Ohio. On the opposite page is written, “Found in Rebeldom Sept. 2nd 1864 at Jonesboro Ga. on the Macon Railroad, Capt. C. R. Maus, Co. I, 94th Regt. O.V.I.” Maus had served with the 94th since it was formed in the summer of 1862 and resigned in January 1865.
