Postwar Autograph Letter Signed by Confederate General John B. Gordon, as U.S. Senator from Georgia

An 1892 autograph signed letter by John B. Gordon, who was then serving as US Senator from Georgia. During the Civil War, Gordon commanded his Georgia brigade at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and into the campaigns of 1864. Rising to division and corps command, he was wounded several times while participating in most of the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia. In the letter, Gordon writes to Charles E. Rice of Ohio, responding to an invitation with regrets.
The letter was written in ink upon a sheet of stationery bearing the heading, “United States Senate.” Measures about 8” x 10”. Creased at the original folds. The transcript appears below:

My dear Sir:
Your letter of July 14th has just reached me. It has been forwarded to me, after much delay, from Washington. I appreciate most sincerely the cordial invitation it contains and wish to express at the same time my regret at the delay in answering.
