Lieutenant Colonel Ira Spaulding and officers of the 50th New York Engineer Regiment pose before their headquarters cabin in this March 1864 albumen image by photographer Timothy O’Sullivan. Another copy of this image is in the collection of the Library of Congress. O’Sullivan also produced at least three other images of the Engeineers’ camp that same day, the glass negatives for which are likewise available from the Library of Congress (see them here, here, and here). One in particular image several of the same officers can be seen, including Spaulding.

The albumen image measures about 8 3/4” x 6 3/4”. It is unmounted, with a small chip at the lower-left corner. It also has some very slight wrinkling typical of unmounted albumens.
