This 5” black silk and velvet cockade features a brass New York device at its center. Likely this would have been worn on the chapeau of a New York militia officer. Although often thought of as a mourning object due to its color, black was the official color of cockade to be worn on many pre-Civil War army and militia uniforms. Excellent condition with one tip missing along the bottom edge, along with slight fraying along several of the tips.
