A CDV view of American author John Lothrop Motley, best known for his two popular histories The Rise of the Dutch Republic (1855) and The United Netherlands (1860-67). He was also a diplomat who helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates during the Civil War. The carte is in good condition, but was trimmed for an earlier album placement. Measures 2 1/4” x 3 1/2”. On the reverse are a pencil notation and the label of Earle’s Galleries of Philadelphia.
