A bearded gentleman wearing a civilian coat poses in this bust-view CDV by Quincy & Co. of Charleston, South Carolina. The man is identified on the reverse in period ink as “F. A. Sawyer,” and dated 1863. F. A. Sawyer served as a private in the Charleston Battalion (1st Battalion, South Carolina Infantry—also called the Charleston Guard). He enlisted in Company A on April 1, 1862. His company was part of the garrison of Battery Wagner near Charleston, and it was present during the July 1863 Union assault led by the 54th Massachusetts (made famous in the 1989 movie Glory). Measures about 2 1/2” x 4”.
